Walking along with Doso with their fingers intertwined made Aurelai feel strangely giddy and young. She couldn't remember holding hands with someone in such open honesty, confidence, and cordiality since she was young, long before she was married to a man she didn't know she didn't loved, before she committed the atrocious act that made her both infamous and beloved among her people, before the Gift of Autor changed them all and made their lives everlasting. The fountain of youth they had been given was a blessing, undoubtedly, but the years that passed changed you forever, and this strange relapse into the innocent gaiety of her long lost and short-lived youth was a relief to a careworn heart.
In a show of open affection, she wrapped her free arm around Doso's and laid her cheek against his shoulder, smiling happily. "When I walk with you it feels just like the old days. I haven't a care or a worry in the world. I'm back in the old Spring Festivals held in Central Square, do you remember them? With maypole dances and streamers everywhere and men on stilts. People these days wouldn't appreciate it. There's television and rebel-minded playwrights and movie screens. They don't know what simple pleasures are." She sighed. There was no bringing back the past, but it was nice to reminisce.

He looked down at her, planting a soft kiss on the top of her golden head as she sighed the memories of the distant past. He had always loved those festivals as a boy, chasing the other children around the stilt performers, hoping to have one tumble but never able to gain success. It was hard to watch their culture die, the culture Valir had held on to for so long. Strip clubs and brothels, adult movies and drugs… whether human, Aurillian or Brudjan, they all held higher prerogative than the old days of innocent fairs and bake offs.
“One day maybe,” he mused, hoping that soon this would all be over, and the evil that had seeped from the Brudjans would be overrun by the simple pleasures that Aurelai spoke of. “One day, maybe sooner than we both think, Valir will be open to be changed, to be taken back to the morals and values of those days. When the simple pleasures in life were far more important than the selfish pleasures that rule today.”

Aurelai did not utter the doubts that played across her mind at Doso's words. She did not believe that the world could ever go back and in truth she wasn't sure she really wanted it to. The world of today could take a few lessons from its ancient counterpart, but there were many good things about modern times, too. It was simply hard to see them past all of the bad that loomed, past Bruis and the depraved people he had gathered around him. Was it wrong that it was that fact, moreso than the danger that he put the Aurillians, that pained her more than anything else? The company her son kept. It made her weep.
But now was not the time for reflections of those sorts and so she kept her doubts to herself. She only hummed an agreement and walked on for a few paces in silence. Until she got a very bold idea. If they were so keen to revisit the past, there was one way they could do it. She turned to face Doso, walking backwards ahead of him and still holding his hand in that pleading way, her eyes sparkling with a mischief that was rarely if ever seen in her features.
"Let's sneak into the museum!"

Doso gave a quiet cackle at her idea, the child like mischief that had twinkled in her beautiful eyes all that was needed to persuade him. Enjoying that she was having fun, he broke into a jog, making sure she was able to keep up as they dashed out into the streets from their home. He slowed to a hurried walk, pulling her into his side, wrapping his arm around her slender waist and keeping her snug by his side as they played teenagers and misbehaved.
“Sometimes I wonder whether you’re fit to be Queen with these naughty ideas of yours,” he joked, giving her a wink from above as they crossed the paved Central District in the still hours of night, the fountains sleeping just like the rest of the non Vampyr of Valir. “Though one can never take things too seriously, or so you keep telling me.”

She was delighted at how easy he was to convince, and when he laughed she giggled, too, biting her lip to stem the tide lest they be 'discovered!' When he called her naughty she could only grin, and when he repeated her words back to her she beamed. "It's true," she told him, pretending to be smug over her own opinions. "And I'm not fit to be Queen. Which I intend to prove posthaste." She left his side as they came to the ancient gate at the front of the museum and she began to climb, easily hoisting herself to the top and then straddling the stone pedastle between castiron finery. She reached down and offered her hands to help him over.
"Although, I should warn you," she continued in mock-stern tone. "I am very serious about breaking and entering." She nodded dourly, affecting an austere line of the mouth that didn't fit her soft features or playful mood in the least. In fact, it looked more like Doso than it did herself, though of course the Queen would never mock her friend intentionally, would she? Haloshine.

His eyes narrowed at her, but only for a moment before he laughed again and climbed the gate without the need of her help. He too straddled the large gate, steadying himself easily with his heightened senses. He looked at her beaming face, something that he hadn’t seen in so many years he was sure it had been lost to the sands of time like so many other things about her. She was how she should be, bubbly, exciting, funny and caring. A little cheeky and a whole lot of fun.
He slid his hand along her jaw.
What the hell was he doing? His insides churned as he realised what he was about to do… and his eyes widened just the tiniest bit. She was his Queen! He was her centuries old friend and advisor. Was he but a fool clinging onto simple things like they held meaning? What did it matter, surely a simple kiss would not do anything to make thing uncertain between them. They had an eternity to exist, one kiss was hardly going to matter much in the long term scheme of things.
At least that’s what he told himself as his lips were slowly brought to her own, brushing lightly across them for the most hesitant of moments before falling against them properly. He was a fool, an old fool who was likely to never hear the end of it, with her joking tone. About how they forgot their places on night and he kissed her while they were breaking into the museum to revisit the old days.

She was stunned, to say the least. She and Doso had shared their comfortable friendship for so many years now that it seemed unlikely to ever change and she couldn't imagine any way that she would want it to. But the minute his fingers touched her face she realized that something was slightly different. Her smile did not falter nor her mood, but she turned her thoughts from the museum and mischief and focused now on him. When he leaned in she realized what was happening and with a flutter in her chest she felt a range of emotions: fear, excitement, confusion, elation. But when their lips finally met her mind was as quiet as a still, mirror-like sea.
It felt... natural. Warm and inviting and easy, like slipping into a well worn pair of house slippers though she was sure she would never tell Doso she had ever compared him to a pair of house slippers. She was no stranger to kissing but it had been a long time since she had indulged in the pastime and she had never even imagined doing so with the man now seated before her atop the museum gate.
But she liked it, not just because it was rebellious and insane but because it was nice, and she lifted her own hands to burrow into the front of his clothing, fighting back the smile that threatened to break the kiss and end the moment. When at last the kiss came to an instinctive lull, she pulled away and looked at his damp lips with a little amazement. She lifted her fingertips to touch thems as if uncertain she had just been there, and then meeting his eyes she laughed softly, under her breath. Had they just done that, she seemed to ask?
And then lights came on in the foyer of the museum. There were voices inside and sounds of movement. She gasped. They were discovered!

But who cares? Doso certainly didn’t… no, he was far too dumb struck to do much but fall off the gate like a dead bird off a perch. There was a good ten seconds when he was completely unresponsive, and unaware that people were shuffling about inside, about to come out and find them. When he finally snapped to, he gave a groan as if he’d just been interrupted from the most relaxing sleep before he jumped easily down off the gate.
“Come on!” he ushered her with a raised whisper, raising his arms up and motioning for her to jump down. He saw the doors to the museum open and he gave a half laugh. “Unless you want to explain to them what we were doing up there.”

It was hard to be sneaky and deviant when all you want to do is fall to the ground laughing and stay there. From the moment that groan of his defied the guards' interruption she wanted to laugh, and when he dropped down and offered her his arms she wanted to laugh, and even as she accepted his help, slipping easily into the outstretched envelope of his hold and lightly dropping to the ground below, she wanted to laugh. As she tried to imagine how she would explain to the humans - not to mention the vampyr who would eventually hear the rumors - what they were doing up on the gate, she really did laugh. She leaned helplessly into his stronger body, almost doubling over with the overwhelming need to vent the chaotic feelings that bubbled up, and she chortled into one hand while the other gripped her middle despite the danger they were in of being exposed.
Even through her fit of giggles she realized that she was no good for trying to get them out of there. The nearest building was a street's length away and they would surely be seen. So through her laughter, which was bringing tears of amusement to her eyes, she gasped, "I don't know where to go!"

“Some help you are,” he managed to half laugh out, not being able to help but laugh as well at the whole messed up situation. He saw just a few seconds of opportunity, and with a moment of concentration, a whole lot of ‘shhhh’ pushed into her mind and the use of the darkness of a nearby unlit area, he was able to mask their presence in the darkness while the human guards of the museum looked around the gate with puzzled looks on their faces.
When they shuffled back inside, each accusing the other of losing their mind, Doso let the light of the nearest street lamp slip over their bodies. He found the whole thing incredibly amusing, as well as the fact that she found it hysterical. However, he could not help but shush her by wrapping his arms around her waist.
“Now where were we?” he murmured before kissing her again, this time a little less chaste than the first. In all honesty, it’d been over 600 years since he’d last made out… that first kiss had caught him a little off guard. But he was a fool to not want more of her sweet tasting lips, even if she was going to laugh at him. He as a man, and she was an insanely beautiful woman… you couldn’t fight the logistics of it.

She followed his lead, clamping her hand over her mouth to stop the flood of laughter that threatened. At first it made her cheeks pinken and her eyes pop to hold in her laughter, her skin changing from lack of oxygen. But eventually, as they hid themselves in the shadow, she regained control of herself. She began to hold her breath so that it wouldn't be heard, instead of because she felt the urge to laugh. Her chest was still full of the ironic situation, but she no longer felt the need to giggle. And all the while she clung steadfast to his guiding hand.
At long last the guards made their way back inside, and she returned her gaze to Doso. They both smiled for a moment at the entire situation, and then silence settled in over the night and over Aurelai's emotions. Her blue eyes shifted back up at him, studying him quietly, as the light of the streetlight illuminated her features. And then he was nearing her and she lifted her gaze to him more solidly, her chin tilting upwards. She felt wrapped up in his arms once more but this time not because they were fleeing anything; rather they were running towards it.
The adrenaline of the last few moments was clearly still painting their actions because this time when Doso kissed her she kissed him back solidly and more like an adult that the experiemental teenage kiss she had given him before. She wrapped one arm around his neck, the other hand splaying across his chest as she kissed him more deeply, her cheeks blushing even so near as she was to him but she didn't stop even if she was embarrassed. She paused, teased his bottom lip with a brief touch of her own, and then kissed him again, unable to keep her mouth from his even for the sake of style.

Simple pleasures in life…
A kiss, but not one of lust or selfish wanting of sexual gratification, a kiss that showed caring, and maybe even love. Doso had fallen in love once in his long years, to a woman who did not recover from the illness. He cursed the heavens for the pain it caused him, and for centuries he held a grudge over everything because of the feelings that had been stolen from him. The simple pleasures of being in love, of sharing a bond and being close to another person, both physically and mentally.
He had shared that bond with Aurelai for a long time, though neither had acted on the feelings. He had felt a plethora of feelings towards her, but had accounted it towards his devotion as a subject. He had not realised that it was something far more intimate then that, but now he knew. He knew the moment his lips met hers again and instead of fumbling like a school boy, he remembered the passion that could be exhibited through the act, and he revelled in the touch and the way it made his heart pulse in his chest.
But she was his Queen, and he was just an advisor. He pulled his lips from hers in the assertion that his actions were wrong. “Forgive me,” he said, his face turning to the cold stone it almost always was when he wasn’t with her. “That was inappropriate for me to do. You are my Queen… I shouldn’t have kissed you like that.”

The suddenness of his moral revelation caught her off guard, and she wondered if she had done something wrong. Ought she have insisted that the second kiss not take place? She had only been giving way to the heat of the moment and now that he looked so grave she wondered if he thought her easy for having given in. Ought she have turned him down the first time, citing love for their relationship just the way it is, instead of returning the surprising touch of his lips to hers? Maybe he had meant it when he said he didn't know sometimes if she were fit to be Queen. Ought she have stopped him?
She was his Queen. Queen, queen, queen. That's all she ever heard from anyone. Maybe she was sick of being queen. Maybe just once she wanted only to be a woman, any woman, every woman, anyone but Queen. But as soon as she thought that she regretted it. This title and duty had become a part of her and she knew that she would be unable to live without serving her people somehow. But did it have to claim everything she was? Did it have to gorge itself on even those moments when she was just a woman, or just a friend, or just Aurelai?
She smiled sadly at Doso and let her arms fall from around him. She wouldn't force him to rethink his ways; she respected him and his seriousness too much for that. She knew about his former love and didn't wish to disrespect her memory. So she let him retreat back into his shell of science. But not without one of her ever patient chidings. "Tonight, I relieved you of your duties to your queen. I wanted only to be your friend." And with that she lowered her gaze, heartbroken that the short-lived stab at being carefree had ended so suddenly and so painfully.
"We should return to the castle. We have a long night ahead of us tomorrow in preparation for the meeting with the Prime Minister, and we should both be well-rested."

He scorned himself for ever acting on such an instinctive thought, for not thinking things through like he seemed to do for everything else. It was foolish for him to have ever do something like that, for surely there was nothing that could come of it. His hands, now cold were put into his pants pockets and like a child who had his candy taken off of him, he almost pouted as he pondered the events that had just befallen the pair.
“You’re right, as always.” He pushed a small smile to his lips and offered her his arm in an attempt to return normalcy to them. “As much as I love watching sunrises,” he added on sarcastically. “I think some sleep would do me well.”

She was very suddenly, and completely without explanation, very angry. It was an undirected anger, and it was impossible to tell whether she meant it for Doso or for herself or for the situation at large. But she was absolutely sick of it, whatever it was, and as she felt herself being chided by some unnamed force back into her stile role of Queen from the freedom she had experienced only moments before she felt her heart lash out and rebel.
On her features this rebellion showed up as a twitch of her brow, which darkened and dimpled. Her mouth pulled into a strange frown and she tossed her head, the way when does when they are thinking that they cannot believe the actions of another. (Her own actions?) And with no other option available to her except to do exactly as both she and Doso suggested and go straight to bed, she started off, walking quickly and pointedly away from Doso whether he meant to follow her or not. She did not look back to see if he tried to catch up, though she would be sorry later if she looked back and found out he didn't.
